Portugal Vacation
Spots
North Portugal consists of four
regions: Porto, Douro, Tras-os-Montes, and Minho. Porto is the
name of a key city in this section of Portugal, having a mix of
traditional beliefs with a dynamic excitement, and with a
beautiful coastline and a very active downtown area. The Douro
River cuts through verdant cliff and mountain areas, and dams
taming the river provide a pleasant cruise and pleasure boat
experience. A place of nature and festivities defines
Tras-os-Montes, where hiking and canoeing are popular, and
you’ll find a superb park in Vidago with pools for swimming and
a golf course. Minho lines the coast with gorgeous beaches and
resorts, and an inland national park covering three
mountains.
Central Portugal, called Beiras,
contains two distinct areas. The inland area shows a
mountainous, rocky terrain, with the highest peak in Portugal
in the Serra da Estrela. A number of churches, monasteries,
convents, and castles display art and history of centuries
past. The Buçaco woodlands is a premier natural area to visit,
surrounding the royal palace of Buçaco. The coastal area is
littered with pine forests and white-sand beaches, and
traditional artisans produce ceramic and glasswork. The Lisbon
region features the capital city of Portugal, situated on the
right bank of the Tagus River. Lisbon has a wealth of physical
reminders of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries starting in the
1400’s. Activities in Lisbon include festivals, water sports,
shopping, and exciting nightlife along the waterfront. Hear a
traditional Fado song while dining. The nearby town of Sintra
has fertile lands, lush landscape, and a culture heritage of
mansions. Lisbon
rentals are a great choice for history
buffs.
The Alentejo region is a quieter
area with less population. Attractive villages and towns sit
along the Rota dos Castelos (Castle Region). Plains cover the
area around Évora, including Monsaraz, Vila Viçosa, Estremoz,
and Arraiolos; the latter is famous for tapestries made in the
style of 17th and 18th century drawings. On the west side of
the region, refresh at a wonderful Atlantic Beach. Vacationing
in Algarve is joyous with practically constant
sunshine, inviting waters, and eye-catching beaches. Its
history is traceable in the architecture, especially in
the Moorish chimneys, terraces, and homes. Golf, tennis,
and spirited nightlife is enjoyable in Algarve. The north
side of the region features lush fertile grounds, while
the south coast is a terrain of sand beaches, red cliffs,
and grottoes.
The Azores Islands are nine
islands formed in an archipelago: São Miguel, Santa Maria,
Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Corvo and Flores
islands. Lakes here are in two colors, blue and green. The
varied landscape includes prairie lands, the bright colors of
azalea and hydrangea, and volcanoes. The very temperate climate
makes this area special for vacationers. The Madeira Island
archipelago was formed by volcanoes and is made up of the
islands Madeira and Porto Santo, along with the Desertas and
the Selvagans island groups. The landscape of Madeira lines the
roads with waterfalls and trees, and is also shaped by
mountains with heavy vegetation. The capital of Funchal has a
nightlife filled with gaming, lively bars and dance
clubs.

Portugal / Portugal Vacation Rentals
Portugal is a country of diverse
landscapes, festivities, and a wealth of history. A Portugal
vacation rental can be just as historical.
Portugal History and
Heritage
Portugal brings a number of
cultural/historical sites to the world by UNESCO’s World
Heritage designation. The Monastery of Batalha symbolizes the
Castilian victory in the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, and housed
the Portuguese monarchy for two centuries. A Natural Landscape
designation is given to Sintra, a beautiful town blending
history, art, and forest land in places like the Pena Palace.
The Historical Centre of Évora is a white-painted city museum
at its peak when the Portuguese crown came to Évora, and had a
major impact on Brazilian architecture. Other sites are also
well worth visiting on your trip to Portugal. While it may be
tempting to stay indoors in the comfort of your luxurious
Portugal vacation home, you will miss out on a bunch if you
don't explore!
